American Staffordshire Terrier

American Staffordshire Terrier was used for bullbaiting in England and originally called the Bull-and-Terrier Dog, Half and Half or Pit Dog. It is often confused with the "American Pit Bull Terrier,"which is a different, distinct breed. They are members of the terrier group and were AKC recognized in 193. They range in size from 17 to 19 inches tall at the shoulder. They come in any color, solid, parti, or patched is permissible, but all white, more than 80 per cent white, black and tan, and liver not to be encouraged. This breed has an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years. Minor health problems such as elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and heart disease, and major ailments like progressive retinal atrophy,canine hip dysplasia, and cerebellar ataxia. The American Staffordshire Terriers have also suffered from cruciate ligament rupture and allergies.

Australian Cattle Dog

Australian Cattle Dog the name tells it all. They are from Austrailia and they were bred to herd cattle. The coat color should be blue, blue-mottled or blue speckled with or without other markings or good even red speckle all over. They are members of the herding group and were AKC recognized in 1980. They range in size from 17 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder. Australian Cattle Dogs have a lifespan of about 10 to 13 years. Major health concerns include progressive retinal atrophy, canine hip dysplasia, elbow dyspasia, deafness, and Osteochondrosis Dissecans. Some of the diseases that can be occasionally seen in them are lens luxation, cataract, con Willebrand's Disease, and Persistent Pupillary Membrane.

Australian Shepherd

Australian Shepherd  probably developed in the Pyrenees Mountains somewhere between Spain and France and is  associated with Basque shepherds. They are members of the herding group and were AKC recognized in 1991. They range in size from 18 to 23 inches tall at the shoulder and their coats can be black, blue merle, red merle and red with or without white markings. The Australian Shepherd dog has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years. Minor health issues include iris coloboma, nasal solar dermatitis,hypothryoidism, Pelger-Huet syndrome, canine hip dysplasia, and Collie Eye Anomaly. They are also susceptible to cataract, progressive retinal atrophy, lumbar sacral syndrome, Persistent Pupillary Membrane, distichiasis, von Willebrand's Disease,eplepsy, and patent duct arteriosus.

Basset Hound

Basset Hound was originally developed in France as a huntng  trailing dog. They are members of the hound group and were AKC recognized in 1885.They should not exceed 14 inches tall at the shoulder. They can be any hound color, which includes combinations of black, tan, white, red and other colors. The Basset Hound  has an average lifespan of 8 to 12 years.  Major health conditions that may affect them includes Osteochondrosis Dissecans, gastric torsion, eklbow dysplasia, thrombopathy, entropion,otitis externa,ectropion,    glaucoma, von Willebrand's Disease, and canine hip dysplasia. Back problems due to obesity are common.  They may also suffer from patellar luxation.

Bearded Collie

Bearded Collie are believed to have originated in Central Europe and used oherd sheep. They are  are born black, blue, brown or fawn, with or without white markings. Their coats may lighten with age. They are members of the herding group and were AKC recognized in 1976. They range in size from 20 to 22 inches tall at the shoulder. They have a lifespan of lifespan of about 12 to 14 years. The Bearded Collie is susceptible to some minor health problems, including colonic disease, canine hip dysplasia, hypoadrenocorticism, pemphigus,and epilespy.   Other diseases that can be occasionally seen in the breed are cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, von Willebrand's disease, and persistent pupillary membrane.

Border Collie

Border Collie originated in the border country between Scotland and England as a sheep herder. Their coat can be rough or smooth and includes any color in bi-color, tri-color, merle, sable, or solid patterns.  They are members of the herding group and were AKC recognized in 1995.They range in size from 18 to 22 inches tall at the shoulder. They have a lifespan of 10 to 14 years and are prone to the following health problems seizures, progressive retinal atrophy, osteochondritis dissecans, lens luxation, hypothyroidism,  patent ductus arteriosus, and Collie eye anomaly, canine hip dysplasia. They may also occasionally suffer from compulsive behavior, cerebellar abiotrophy, and ceroid lipofuscinosis.

Brittany

Brittany originated in the French province as a bird dog. They are members of the sporting group and were AKC recognized in 1934. They average size at 30 to 40 pounds and 17½ to 20½ inches at the shoulder.  Their coat can be orange and white or liver and white in either clear or roan patterns. The Brittany has an average lifespan of 12 to 13 years. Major health concerns includes canine hip dysplasia, and less sever health issues such as hypothyroidism and epilepsy.

Bulldog originated in the British Isles and use in bull baiting. Their coat may be brindle, white, red, fawn, fallow or piebald.They are members of the non-sporting Group and were AKC recognized in 1886. They range in size from 40 to 50 pounds. The average lifespan for a Bulldog is between 8 and 12 years. The physical characteristic of this breed can lead to many health challenges.The Bulldog is susceptible to keratoconjunctivitis sicca, ventricular septal defect, canine hip dysplasia, shoulder luxation, internalized tail, stenotic nares, and elongated soft palate. They have also been known to suffer from urethral prolapse or vaginal hyperplasia occasionally.entropion, cherry eye, elbow dysplasia,patellar luxation, distichiasis, ectropion, and demodicosis.

Bull Terrier was originally produced in England and used for dog fighting and bull baiting. They are members of the terrier Group and were AKC recognized in 1885. There is no size standard, but most stand 21 to 22 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 50-70 pounds. They can be all white (markings on the head are permissible) or colored. The Bull Terrier has an average lifespan of 11 to 14 years.They may suffer from patellar luxation, heart complication, allergies and compulsive behavior, and more serious conditions such as kidney failure and deafness.

Canaan Dog

Canaan Dog originated in the Land of Canaan and used as a guard and herd dog of the ancient Israelites. They are members of the herding group and were AKC recognized in 1997.They range in size from 19 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and 35 to 55 pounds. They come in two color patterns: either predominantly white with a mask, with or without additional patches of color, or solid colored with or without white trim. The Canaan Dog has an average lifespan of 12 to 13 years. They normally do not suffer from any major or minor health problems.

Chinese Shar-Pei

 The Chinese Shar-Pei was originally a multipurpose Chinese farm dog. They are members of the non-sporting group and were AKC recognized in 1992.They range in size from 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder and 45 to 60 pounds. Only solid coat colors and sable are acceptable. They are noted for their cuddly wrinkles,bluish-black tongue, and unusual head shape. The Chinese Shar-Pei has an average lifespan of 8 to 10 years. They can suffers from minor health issues like lip and skin fold pyodermas, otitie externa, hypothyroidism, patellar luxation, allergies, and amyloidosis. Minor problems includes entropion and canine hip dysplasia.

Chow Chow

Chow Chow originated in China as a working dog. They come in five colors - red, black, blue, cinnamon and cream - and are known for their blue/black tongue. They are members of the non sporting group and were AKC recognized in 1903. They range in size from 17 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder with an average lifespan of 8 to 12 years. The Chow may be prone to minor health concerns like elbow dysplasia,  gastric torsion, elongated palate, stenotic flares, glaucoma, distichiasis, persistent pupilary membrane, and cataracts. Serious conditions includes entropion, canine hip dysplasia, and patellar luxation and renal cortical hypoplasia.

Clumber Spaniel

Clumber Spaniel is believe to  have originated in France. They are one of the original nine breeds registered by the AKC  in 1884. They are members of the sporting group and range in size from 17 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder and 55 to 85 pounds.  They have a white coat and may have lemon or orange-colored markings. The Clumber Spaniel  has an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years. They are  susceptible to intervertebral disc disease, a major health concern.  Other minor health problems that the breed is prone to are otitis externa, ectropion, entropion and seizures.

English Springer Spaniel

English Springer Spaniel  and Cocker Spaniels were originally born in the same litters, The smaller "Cockers" hunted woodcock while their larger littermates were utsed to flush, or "spring," game.  They are members of the sporting group and were  AKC recognized in 1910. Their average size is 40 to 50 pounds and 19 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder. Their coats   can be black or liver with white, blue or liver roan, and tricolor. The English Springer Spaniel, w has an average lifespan of 10 to 14 years. They are  prone to major health problems like elbow dysplasia, otitis externa,and canine hip dysplasia. Minor issues include progressive retinal atrophy, phosphofructokinase deficiency, and retinal dysplasia.

Field Spaniel

Field Spaniel originated in England and was used to find, flush and retrieve. They  can be black, liver or golden liver in color; tan points or white markings are acceptable. They are members of the sporting group and were AKC recognized in 1894. Their ideal size is 17 to 18 inches tall at the shoulder and above 25 pounds.
 The Field Spaniel has an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years. They may be prone to minor health issues such as hypothyroidism, otitis externa, seizures, heart murmurs, canine hip dysplasia and patellar luxation.

Finnish Spitz

Finnish Spitz is the national dog of Finland and use to hunt small game and birds. They were originally known as the Suomenpystrykorva and the Finnish Barking Birddog.They have a lustrous golden-red coat, which ranges from pale honey to deep auburn and are members of the non-sporting group. They were AKC recognized in 1991 and range in size from 15½ to 20 inches tall at the shoulder. The Finnish Spitz has an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years. They are prone to some health concerns, including canine hip dysplasia,epilepsy, and petellar luxation.

German Pinscher

German Pinscher were originally from Germany and used to hunt  vermin. They are members of the working group and were  AKC recognized in 2003. They are between  17-20 inches tall at the highest point of the withers. Their coats can be black, blue, brown, fawn or red in color with some having red or tan markings. The German Pinscher has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years and is not troubled with any major or minor health problems.

Irish Terrier

Irish Terrier originated in Ireland to hunt vermin on the farm. They are members of the terrier group and were AKC recognized in 1885. The average size of the breed is 18 inches tall at the shoulder and approximately 25-27 pounds. The coat is usually bright red, golden red, red wheaten, or wheaten. they have an average life span of 12 to 15 years.  Minor health problems include urinary stones.

Keeshond were used as barge dogs there is n exact origin recorded for this breed. They are members of the non-sporting group and were AKC recognized in 1930. The ideal size is 17 to 18 inches tall at the shoulder. The coat color  is a mixture of gray, black and cream, with variations from light to dark and distinctive  markings and shadings in the eye area, including a delicate, dark line slanting from eye to ear and expressive eyebrows. They have an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years. Some of the ailments that affect this breed are canine hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, epilepsy, various skin problems, renal cortical hypoplasia, Tetralogy of Fallot, and mitral valve insufficiency.

Kerry Blue Terrier

Kerry Blue Terrier are a native of County Kerry, Ireland where they were all round farm dogs. they are members of the  terrier group and were AKC recognized in 1922. They should be around 18½ inches tall at the shoulder and 33 to 40 pounds, with females slightly smaller. After 18 months the dog should be any shade of blue gray or gray blue from the deep slate to light blue gray. They have an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years. Health problems include clotting factor XI deficiency, retinal folds, cataract, entropion, Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca, canine hip dysplasia, spiculosis, otitis externa and hair follicle tumors. Major problems may include cerebellar abiotrophy.

Standard Manchester Terrier

Standard manchester Terrier was developed in England to hunt rats. They are members of the terrier group and were AKC recognized in 1887. They weighs more than 12 lbs but must not exceed 22 lbs and are black and tan in color.They do not suffer from any major health issues,however they may be susceptible to minor problems like von Willebrand's Disease, hypothyroidism, cardiomyopathy, patellar luxation, Legg-Perthes disease, and progressive retinal atrophy.They have a average life span of 14-16 years.

Norwegian Elkhound came to us  from Scandinavia where they were used to hunt elk. They are  silver-grey dogs with distinctive saddle markings. They are members of the hound group and were AKC recognized in 1913. They range in size from 19½ to 20½ inches tall at the shoulder and 48 to 55 pounds. They have an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years. Occasional  they suffer from intracutaneous cornifying epithelioma, patellar luxation, Fanconi Syndome, progressive retinal atrophy, canine hip dysplasia,renal dysplasia, hot spots, and sebaceous cysts.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Dog

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Dog there is no authentic record of the development of this breed. They are members of the sporting group abd were  AKC recognized in 2003. They range  in size from 17 to 21 inches tall at the shoulder. Coat color is any shade of red, ranging from a golden red through dark coppery red, with lighter featherings on the underside of the tail, pantaloons, and body. The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever has an average lifespan of 11 to 13 years. Thye are not prone to any major health concerns; however it may suffer from minor issues such as progressive retinal atrophy and canine hip dysplasia.

They  can range in color from tan to chestnut to red golden, with white markings on the tip of the tail, chest, toes and on the center line of the face. Portuguese Water Dog which is referred to as the Cao de Agua (dog of water) in its native Portugal,was bred to accompany fisherman on their boats. Its coat can be curly or wavy and is black, white, or brown, or combinations of black or brown with white. They are memnbes of the working group and were AKC recognized in 1983. They range in size from 35 to 60 pounds and 17 to 23 tall inches at the shoulder. The Portuguese Water Dog has an average lifespan of 10 to 14 years. Minor health problems such as GM1 storage disease, canine hip dysplasia,distichiasis, Addison's disease, alopecia, juvenile cardiomyopathy are found in this breed, and major health issues like progressive retinal atrophy. They occasionally suffer from irritable bowel syndrome and seiures.

Samoyed was developed by the Samoyede people of Siberia as reindeer herders and sled dogs. they should be  pure white, white and biscuit, cream or biscuit in color. Siberian Husky  originated from within the Chukchi Tribe, off the eastern Siberian peninsula and used as a sled dog. All colors from black to pure white are allowed, with a variety of markings on the head being normal. They are members of the working group and were AKC recognized in 1930. they range in size from 20 to 23 ½ inches tall at the shoulder and 35 to 60 pounds. The Siberian Husky have a life span of 11 to 13 years. Minor health problems such as progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, cataract, and corneal dystrophy have been reported.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is from Ireland and was a farm dog. They are members of the terrier group and were AKC recognized in 1973. Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is used as a gundog in hunting. This breed was delevoped by Eduard Karel Korthals in Netherlands, Germany. They range in size from 20 to 24 inches at the shoulders.They were AKC recognized in 1887. Steel gray with brown markings is the prefered coat color, frequently chestnut brown, or roan, white and brown; white and orange also acceptable. Less desirable coat colors are an uniformly brown coat, all white coat, or white and orange and a black coat is disqualified.
