Agility is a fun obstacle course that teaches the dog and owner to communicate with each other. The course is usually
laid out on a 100 x 100 feet level field. I have mine in a tighter formation so that I do not have to run so much. ( Not as
young as I use to be). The usual course consist of weave poles, jumps, broad jumps, hoop jump, pause table, teeter,
dog walk, tunnel ( open and chute) and an A -Frame.
Shoes and I have two sets of 6 weave poles with a base, three adjustable jumps,a hoop jump.teeter, pause
table, dog walk.and broad jumps The equipement can be purchased but it is far cheaper to build your own. Even DIY is
costly so I still have a few pieces to make yet. However each piece takes time for both you and your dog to master - so building
your own pieces works out well.
November 2012 - I finished building broad jumps which I will be adding to the course as soon as the weather allows us
to play again.
I have added an wireless fence to the back yard around the agility course. Now we can practice without worring about
Shoes chasing the cats into the woods. Shoes has a very high prey drive and when excited will go off course and into the woods
to chase any small game. This also helps protects her from the archery range as it adds an additional buffer between
her regular play area and the range. To get to the archery range she would have to go through three boundries.
I am thinking about adding a tunnel to the course and maybe a small scaled down A frame. I see no reason
to add a full size A frame since a smaller one will work just as well for us.
2015 update I have decided not to add the A frame or the tunnel since she is enjoying what we have
and this course is for our enjoyment only.
We both enjoyed the time we were able to run this course but it is now 2021 and Shoes has retired from this activity. She
is 11 1/2 years old and no longer runs but she does walk the weave poles about once a week. The rest of the course has been
put into storage.
